White Mountian Road Club received the following inquiry from John Camoriano, a physician at Mayo Clinic as he and his colleagues are interested in conducting a study in cyclists on the effect of statins (a class of cholesterol-lowering medication) on fitness. Please contact John directly if you are interested.
Dear Fellow Bikers
My colleagues at Mayo in the cardiology department are interested in studying the effects of a cholesterol-lowering medication class, the statins on muscle strength in cyclists. We are in the preliminary stages of trying to find out the potential numbers of cyclists out there, male or female, who are already on a statin drug like lipitor, Vytorin, crestor, etc.
If there are enough interested people who cycle and are on a statin drug we would propose that they come to Mayo for VO2 max and/or power testing for at least 2 tests; one test on the statin and one test off of the statin.
The potential benefits to the cyclists would be potentially free lab tests and strength and/or V02 max testing as well as the ability to participate in a trial that could benefit patients by helping to define what effects, if any, that statins may have on muscle.
If you are interested in being placed on a contact list for this study AND you are on or about to be place on a statin drug then please contact me me at the number or emails below.
