Working as race marshals, assistant judges, and many other
jobs, more than 600 residents from Phoenix and neighboring communities have
volunteered their time and energy to make each race an overwhelming success.
With a major sporting event with national stature and prestige, it is unusual to
find an all-volunteer organization that includes the nonprofit corporate board.
Volunteers are needed to fill the following positions.
Race Marshals
Marshals are responsible for keeping autos off the course
when bicyclists are in the vicinity, for pedestrian control and for assisting
residents in reaching their destinations. Race Marshal training is provided by
White Mountain Road Club and law enforcement personnel. Race Marshals receive a
Race Marshal T-shirt. Shifts of 1-1/2 to 4 hours are available.
Neutral Support
These volunteers provide a one-on-one direct contact for
the team with the race organizers and deliver race results, assist with neutral
feed, and perform other team/event support activities.
Host Families
House some or all of the members of a race team. Hosts
provide sleeping space, use of a bathroom, and refrigerator space. Providing
food is not required but a host family may offer to share meals or give the
riders full use of the kitchen.
Course Setup/Teardown
These volunteers provide assistance
before the race to setup banners, pedestrian fencing, cones and other traffic
signs. Assistance is also needed after an event.
Assistant Judges
Valley of the Sun Assistant Judges work
directly with the Race Officials, providing valuable backup scoring, and
assisting with other official
related duties. We are the only team like it in the world and are
well-respected in the Cycling community. We also have the best view of the race
and access to areas that most people never get to see.
Must be at least 16 years old.
